Brazil's first corn crop was 93% planted as of late last week compared to 83% last year according to AgRural. This represents an advance of 7% for the week. Farmers in Sao Paulo, Minas Gerais, and Goias are wrapping up their soybean planting so they will now focus on finishing planting their corn. There is some concern for dryness in parts of southern Brazil especially for corn that is pollinating, but there is rain in the forecast for the region.
Parana - The first corn crop in Parana is 99% planted with 71% in vegetative development, 21% pollinating, 2% filling grain and the corn is rated 4% average and 96% good according to the Department of Rural Economics (Deral).
Rio Grande do Sul - Corn in Rio Grande do Sul was 84% planted as of late last week with 58% in vegetative development, 26% pollinating, and 16% filling grain according to Emater. The state is expected to plant 748,500 hectares of corn (1.84 million acres) with an average yield of 7,116 kg/ha (113.1 bu/ac). Dryland corn that is pollinating is exhibiting symptoms of moisture stress, whereas the irrigated corn has a good yield potential.
